The Royal Bengal Tiger's Final Roar

June 1996,Mecca of cricket,Lords,London:
Against the likes of Cork,Mullalay,Martin a bespectacled, exuberant youngster from Calcutta who had been written off by cricket pundits after an inauspicious debut in 1992 cracked a phenomenal century on a chill, windy, biting morning at the United Kingdom.
Sourav Chandidas Ganguly had announced his arrival at the world stage.
Twelve years later,in a routine press conference at Bangalore:
"Just one last thing lads, before I leave. I just want to say that this is going to be my last series. I have decided to quit."These were the words used by a mature Sourav Ganguly which shook the roots of Indian Cricket. The choice of words was tantalising,he said 'Quit' instead of 'Retire'.That in itself reflects the lone battle he was waging with the never ending BCCI politics.

Lets play the numbers game;
400 matches,18000 runs,37 centuries ,150 wickets,a healthy average of over 40 and 1 bad series was all it took for the axe to fall on his head. When the whole of Fabulous Four fail against the mystic spin of Mendis and Muralitharan why was sourav zeroed in and dropped from the Rest of India squad? Is this the way to treat a cricketer who played his heart out everytime he donned the Indian colours?
Was it a golden handshake or was it Sourav's own decision,we will never know. There will always be debates raging about the timing of the call; whether Sourav could have played for another ten months or so.Lets respect his decision;C'mon we have been scrutinising every move of his, over the last decade. He is the best person to judge his career.
What the tainted images of Mohd.Azhruddin,Ajay Jadeja or even a Kapil Dev,Dilip Vengsarkar couldnt figure out(time to retire),Dada has.As long as you play for India it is absolutely fine but when one begins to dance to the internal politics,Sourav is not the one to face the music,he plays his own.

All it matters is at the end of the day,Sourav has signalled his exit with dignity.

Sourav,the cricketer

A career which has seen it all.Unimaginable peaks, depth of controversies, team loyalty, internal conspiracies, drawbacks, comebacks, disappointing defeats and intangible victories.
Rahul Dravid says,"
On the off side ,next to God,there is Sourav."
Strong words, but Sourav lived up to it.His ability to pierce through any field on the off side won him his opponent's agony.Ganguly cleared the ropes with ease, the victims being the slower bowlers predominantly.Who could possibly forget his 183 against the Sri Lankans in the 1999 World Cup???Muralitharan was taken to the cleaners. At a point of time in the late 90's Sourav Ganguly became the most feared batsman(he still is!) in world cricket with 7 centuries under his belt in a single season.
The Prince of Kolkata could turn a match on its head in a space of a few overs, not only with the bat but also with the ball. His 5-16 against arch rivals Pakistan will never be forgotten by the people on both sides of the border. His intimidating stance, adventurous strokes, sweet timing, deft placements dented the confidence of bowlers across the globe.Earning himself the name
The Royal Bengal Tiger,he was always on the prowl...

The leader
When Sourav Ganguly took the reigns from Azharuddin,Indian cricket was in dire straits. It had been rocked by the match fixing scandal.Top players had been caught. There was hardly any experience in the Indian side.Tendulkar had been burdened by the expectations of captaincy.A normal cricketer who had accepted the captaincy would have been a victim of the circumstances but the name was Sourav Ganguly. He gleefully accepted the responsibility and shouldered it with zeal.He moulded an inexperienced outfit into world beaters. He made the youngsters believe in themselves.Sehwag,Yuvraj,Kaif,Harbhajan,Zaheer,Parthiv enjoyed their captain's backing. He changed the face of Indian Cricket, bringing about a huge transition.
The team no longer lacked the killer instinct.Aggression was one adjective which went with Sourav Ganguly. He led the team with gusto making Rahul Dravid keep wickets and cement his place in the one day side. Some called him adamant, some adventurous.Sourav was not the one to bother about critics."
Dont worry about things which are beyond your control."he said. The results reflected his words. He had delivered the goods to the people of India.Indian Team was tranformed into Team India.

The Attitude
Can any Indian dream of making an icy cool Stephen Roger Waugh lose his calm.
Sourav Ganguly did.He made Waugh wait unconditionally for the toss.He looked into the eyes of his counterparts. He tormented the Aussies at their own backyard. The streak of aggression he brought in inculcated fears in the minds of the opponents. Dada almost spoilt Steve Waugh's Farewell series. He was one cricketer who shed all inhibitions about reputations.
People said he wore his heart on his sleeve, the English team will always remember Sourav's shirt swinging act at the Lord's balcony in reply to Andrew Flintoff's bare chest scene in India. An excited Sourav took off the Indian jersey and swung it sending Indians back home into a dizzy.England had to bow down to the Maharaj of Cricket.Moral of the stroy:We give back what we get.

The Conquests
Pakistan was sent searching for cover when Sourav Ganguly's boys thrashed them convincingly in both forms of the game in Pakistan itself. No other Indian skipper had manged to do this. The epic 3 match test series against Australia in 2001 where India came from rock bottom to register a series triumphwill stand testimony to his positive attitude.Champions Trophy triumphs,World Cup finals added to the numbers in his list of victories. The skipper trusted his instincts. He proved everyone wrong when he elected to bat on a windy day, when the ball was swinging both sides. He went on to the extent of pursuading Javagal Srinath to comeback after retirement.Obviously he had to succeed. Sourav's ability in man management and nurturing youngsters went a long way in him becoming India's most succesful test skipper ever.

Comeback King Sourav Ganguly Part 2:
"It is easier to give up.All you need to say is I Quit. The tough part is to carry on"-Sourav Ganguly.
A Greg Chappell or a Kiran More would be able to author this section in a better fashion than me!!!
In a public spat in the year 2006 with the then coach Greg Chappell ,Ganguly
was stripped of his captaincy.Accused of lack of motivational and fitness levels Ganguly was dropped."All doors are shut on Ganguly. He cant make it to the team forever" said chairman of selectors Kiran More.(Think twice before you speak, but who cares?!!?!)
Sourav lost his place in the side.Sourav lost his touch but what Sourav did'nt lose was his belief. He went back to the basics, played for Bengal, scored heavily in the Duleep Trophy and after a string of losses for the Indian side,Sourav was recalled. What followed was the most dramatic and remarkable comebacks in world cricket. The man was on a mission to prove his distractors wrong,he did and how!Sourav Ganguly Part 2 was unleashed on the field, his will power and determination came to the forefront.Sourav won the test of his life.Scoring runs like never before,Ganguly was the top run getter for the Indian team in Tests and piled over a 1000 runs in both forms of the game in the calendar year.Subsequently,Ganguly was awarded the
Castrol Asian Cricket of the Year.
Greg Chappel,Kiran More,need anything more?

The Final Roar
"Getting a ticket to the cricket stadium 1000 bucks possibly,
Watching Dada bat,Priceless!
There are some things money can't buy!!!!"
When Sourav Chandidas Ganguly walks into the cauldron at Nagpur, taking guard for one last time a wave of mixed emotions will engulf the cricketing world. The 22 yard strip would be graced by his presence for the final time.Through the grills of helmet if one notices his eyes, Nagpur,2008 would be unmistakably the same as Lords 1996.With the heart of an youngster,Sourav retires .As Sourav Ganguly walks into the sunset of a glittering carreer,he will be always remembered as a cricketer who gave his all for his country. The Royal Bengal Tiger strides away from its hunting ground, the cricketing field, retiring to its cave, the heart of every Indian where it will rest...

Every Indian Is proud of you SOURAV CHANDIDAS GANGULY . U can hold your chin high and leave the field proving everyone that you are made of steel. Hats off .

D.E.A.S Trip.. IV

Woov.. We were on our final day of our D.E.A.S trip.. We wanted to make the maximum use of it.. We were asked to get ready early as we were to go to the Chamundeshwari Temple in Chamundi Hills.. To the biggest of surprise, the teachers were ready before us.. For once i.e .. :D

So we boarded our bus as usual and went in first with 4 busses with both girls and boys behind us.. We raced into the temple first, stood in the queue and waited.. We had a lot of our friends there in Monkeys.. But after some time, it started to get scary.. Lol .. :D

Finally, we got the sight of god.. Prayed for sometime and then proceeded out where we bought Ladoo for ppl back home.. Lol.. Yet again, we were dead hungry and wished we could go eat.. The food in the morning was Okay comprising of Idly, Bread, Dosa etc etc.. After resting in our rooms again for half hour or so, amidst great confusion, the teachers decided to take us to Somanathpur - A temple of historical architecture belonging to the Hoysala Dynasty.. It was fun there where people could just sit down and marvel the architectural skill which the kings of olden times possessed.. After snapping pics there with all our classmates, it was time for us to go back to our hotel.. Finally, we were allowed to watch Batman in our return journey in the bus.. It rocked totally though i slept after the U KNOW HOW I GOT THESE SCARS scene.. :D

We reached the hotel first and rushed into the dining room to catch our seats before the crowd arrives.. And we were successful in doing that.. After eating, few of my friends who did not go to MORE the previous day went onto shop there.. I lost the interest in Shopping.. or rather, i never had any interest in Shopping.. :|:|.. So me and a couple of my friends decided to stay back in our rooms while rest of them went to MORE..

After an hour or so , they finally returned after HEAVY shopping there - I still am not able to realize what more they get there than what can be got here in Chennai.. :| Lol..

And finally, it was time for some mischief.. After asking many of my friends who turned down the offer, i got PREm who decided to walk with me to MYSORE PALACE.. :D:D.. Others, yet again proved to be sissys.. :D

We knew the teachers won't allow there as it is far.. So we lied we were going to MORE, rushed out of the hotel and started our walk to MYSORE PALACE..  And yay ! It was total fun.. We were too very lucky to catch the glimpses of Dussherra celebrations throughout our walk.. People dancing throughout in their folk dances, dressed at Ravana, Durga, etc etc., it indeed proved worthful for us to take the risk of walking to MYSORE PALACE.. :D

We reached there much earlier than we expected to, we ran half the journey.. We dint go in as we din't have enough cash to go in.. So we stayed outside, clicked some pics and came back .. The procession continued.. We wanted to stay and watch it for some more time, but we told our teachers we would come back in half an hour.. So we had to go back.. :D

When we reached the hotel, our teacher came out.. She knew that we had gone to Mysore Palace.. Who else but the scared people in my class would have told her.. But surprisingly, our teacher was kind enough to forgive us.. Lol..

It was late for the train.. We had to leave our hotels by 6.. So i grabbed my uniform and went to have a bath.. Next came the most toughest of activities.. Much tougher than Rapelling or Chimney Climbing.. It was to Pack my bag.. I hate it.. Totally.. I was scared throughout if i would loose something .. My cell, my charger, my wallet .. Damn.. I cant imagine loosing them and coming back home with a straight face.. Lol.. After checking a dozen times before leaving our room, i went on to board the bus.. We knew the journey together for the last time with my class was coming to an end.. No one realized it.. I dint too.. So we were normal.. Joked about things.. Kalaichified.. Did everything till we boarded the train.. And yet again, it was utter confusion in the train.. With girls sitting in the boys seat, boys sitting in the girls seat.. Lol.. But we had fun never the less.. And yea.. We were glad to be back home too..

But this journey has been a real good one.. A test of character especially for someone like me.. Lol.. Hoping for more..

Till then...

D.E.A.S Trip .. III

"Hello.. Good Morning.. " was how a maid there greeted us.. :D Funny.. Woke up early in the morning.. Around 530.. Have never waken up so early in my life.. :D And what was worse to hear was the lady saying - " The Sir wants you to be ready at 730.."

I mean What the ?!? To get ready at 730, why the hell should she spoil my beautiful sleep at 530 itself ? Curses on her.. :D LOl.. So i dozed off again.. While a few of my friends went about with their business.. Finally it was time for me to wake up.. At 7.. I realized that Reservations had already happened as to who uses the toilet next.. :D Lol.. And there were still 5-6 more boys to go..

Everyone wanted to have a bath.. But how could they ? It was freaking cold.. No hot water at all.. So i grabbed my brushing kit, a towel and a set of new clothes.. The wait was killing me.. 2 or so had finished.. All of a sudden, an animated character came out bursting.. Who was it ? WAs it a bird ? Was it a plane ? NO.. IT WAS RANGA..!! =))

Oh my god.. He came out saying - " Hey hey please da.. Urgenta varudhuda.. I dint go for 3 days da.."  :D:D I mean how could we not allow him to go ? The place would be disasterous if we din't allow him.. We said no initially.. But then he said Only 2 mins da.. :D

So we allowed him to go in.. Only with the promise of 2 mins.. He went in.. And went on and on.. And on.. Oh my god.. It was killing me..

I knew he would'nt come.. so i decided to go to my friends room and use his toilet there.. And guess who was there ? MR. Nath - our event manager.. With a big tummy of his, he only then went in to have his shave.. That too after that bath.. Funny.. he came out in 2 mins though.. Hats off to him..

And then finally came my time.. I brushed, washed my face and came off in a flash.. Was surprising to myself.. Lol..

We then proceeded to the eating place where they served BALLS.. :D:D Dunno what was stuffed inside.. Or rather u can call it IDLY BALLS.. :D Somehow managed to eat it.. And then, we were told we had to trek down the hill to then board the bus down..

So the trekking started downhill.. I particularly decided not to stick with my class mates as i know all they would be talking about will only be CHELSEA - UNITED.. :((

So i decided to walk front with the N sec ppl.. Lol.. WAs fun.. Gotta know many secrets.. Sources mainly Anjan.. After a 4km long trek, we saw the sight of the bus.. Lol..

And the journey back to mysore.. Stopped at a umm nice restaurant for our lunch.. Was decent.. Much better than what we got in Coorg.. Friends bought Coorg Honey, Coffee etc etc.. But i got ntn.. :D

After our lunch, we went the Namdorling Monastry - which i incidentally went only last holidays.. So it wasn't interesting to me as it seemed to my other mates.. Lol.. Only things which drived me or rather us were a couple of Girls who were there.. Hehe.. Cherriyazz.. :D

After all that, the journey again back to Mysore started.. It ended there.. Cuz i slept all through the journey.. Finally the picture of our hotel gleamed in front of my eyes.. :D Was dead tired and hungry.. So we grabbed our room keys and before anyone did any such reservations for using the toilet, i dashed into it first.. Much to the amuzement of the others.. :D Lol.. After a quick bath, it was time to attend to my stomach which was in need of some fuel.. And umm.. We were served ripping food.. Naan, Paneer Butter masala, Bindy Fry.. Yumm.. Just the perfect food we wanted..

And i went on eating till i realized that I started to over eat.. so it was must for me to walk.. So me and 3 of my friends got permission and started going to MORE - The big Baazaar of Mysore.. Nothing was to our expectations.. But boy oh boy.. Upstairs a kickass Dusherra offer.. They gave branded T-Shirts for 100.. I grabbed a Levi's t- shirt , bought it and was off to our Room.. din't feel sleepy at all after having such a heavy dinner.. So me and srinivas decided to join in the other room for playing a few rounds of UNO cards while Ghan was fast asleep.. What was more fun was PANCHATHANTIRAM was on.. Woov.. Ripping fun.. We went on and on till 11 when finally a ward came and told it was very noisy and forced us to sleep..

As usual, Srinivas refused to give in to sharing his bed.. I was in no mood to fight.. So i grabbed a sheet and went slept down clueless what was in store for us tommm .. :P

D.E.A.S Trip.. II

After a good night's sleep, it was back to business again.. We had to be ready next morning at 7.. All my friends, who are anyday smarter than me in all the aspects woke up at 5 and readied themselves up.. Me, a great man myself, woke up slowly, that too forcibly at 630.. I was literally pushed into the toilet by my friends.. And there too, I dozed off.. :D:D  After all , what's toilet without reading a newspaper.. :P:P

I was among the last batch of students who went down to eat dinner thanks to my own laziness. :D

And there, 3 buses in front of us beamed, destined to take us to Coorg.. The trip, must admit frankly was way too boring..  The bus couldn't pull our weights , I mean how could it ? :D And it constantly went at a very low speed while climbing up.. The teachers were busy watching COMEDIES OF VIVEK.. It was fun but then later turned out to be boring and must say Vulgar.. I happily settled down.. Grabbing my friend's I-Pod and tried dozing off - which i failed to.. The trip started to piss me off..  And worst part was the Fight as to whether United or Chelsea is superior among them started by the two greatest minds - Srinivas and Ghanshyam .. They went on and on and on.. All started to join.. I kept quite.. I had exhausted myself before fighting with them all along 9th and now 10th.. So i decided to keep quite.. But they refused to let me go..

One says Drogba is God.. Another says Ronaldo is God and that he'll see his grand mom play than watching Drogba.. Contradictory statements to one another.. I felt like shouting SHUT UP.. But how could I.. After all , its United..! :D

Finally we arrived at Coorg.. Saw the girls bus passing by.. :D We were taken further down Coorg to a place called as Golden Valley.. What followed from there was by far the most thrilling car ride i've ever had till now.. Oh my god..

We were onto a stony, dusty road.. And oh my god.. We were shaking like a pendulum.. Left Right Left.. And if we din't hold on, there we would have been.. On the roads..! :D  3.5 kms.. Just imagine.. It was like I was holding onto my life.. Literally.. We were tired.. Exhausted.. Our thighs, Hands, the spinal cord started aching.. We had enough.. And when we saw an Estate comin up, it was like Heaven in disguise.. I just felt lyin flat on our bed rooms.. But still, we were denied..

We had to have our breakfasts and zoom.. We were back trekking.. The weight of our body coupled with the weight of our bags..  Please.. Give us a break..

We returned back in the evening.. And finally were given our rooms.. But more Confusion followed.. No one knew exactly where to go.. Many were wandering clueless here and there..

And before we settled in our rooms, it was time for Dinner.. And it sucked.. Yuck.. Campfire was supposed to follow.. But then what's campfire without music dance etc .. I stayed there for a couple of mins.. But then my body could'nt stand any more.. Enough is enough.. I went on to sleep..

R.I.P

D.E.A.S Trip..

29th of September is when our D.E.A.S trip kicked off.. Destination Coorg and Mysore..

So here we were.. On September 29th , after all the shopping, the build up etc, the scene was the train and the station..  Kauvery Express it was at 915.. And as usual, we had to be there an hour early.. Still yet to figure out why.. :D

The station was a scene of bustling activity.. Students here and there, teachers strewn about and security guards patrolling up and down.. We just couldn't wait for the start of our train..

And finally when it did, it was fun.. Just talking, teasing and verbal duels with friends proved to be fun- which ultimately is the basis for this trip..  The train trip was beginning to get boring when a group of girls lit up the scene with dance, music etc.. :D Funniest part was when Ranga was shoo-ed off when he tried to involve himself by teasin the girls there.. Lol..

The rest of the train journey passed off normally.. And finally, we were there at the Mysore Station the next morning at around 815 or so.. Again, CONFUSION.. Where to go , how to go, Why ? All questions propped up.. Loadin our luggages in one bus and yet again transferring to the other - It started to bug me a bit..

Just as we boys were prepared to leave to Coorg - as of what was given in the Itenary - , the event manager changed the plans completely by making the girls go to coorg and boys stay at Mysore - Not that it mattered to us.. :D

Vyshak International was the place we stayed there at Mysore.. A sumptous breakfast followed by room allotment - the morning passed off like that.. The girls left for Coorg, while we were given exactly an hour to refresh ourselves..

After an hour or so, we were taken to PandavPura- An hour's drive from the place we lived - to commence all our activities..

We were split into groups according to our classes and were assigned to do three activities before the end of the day.. They were Rapelling, Chimney Climbing and Trekking..

Sounds ominous.. Rapelling was the first activity in store for us.. The steepest of rocks, a breathtaking scenary down and at the same time the Fear of Heights.. :D:D All made my stomach grumble with fear.. First I was hesitant to do.. Scared rather.. But then after some encouraging words from my friends, i decided to take it up.. After all , what's life without taking Risks.. Though it was a touch scary, it proved out to be much easier than I expected it to be.. :D People have rightly said that The Proof of the Pudding is in its tasting..

After lunch , we were taken to the next activity sight.. Chimney Climbing.. The name seemed strange to us.. We were joking about saying The school's going to make us robbers by askin us to climb the chimney's of others houses.. :D:D

But then, oh my god.. It was freaking tough.. The task was to climb up through a small opening of a couple of rocks.. :D

I bravely went to do it.. But to my disappointment, the man who was there to guide us said NO because the sole of my shoe was jutting out.. :D

So I had to sit watching all my mates go about doing the activity.. And finally, after all , i din't regret not going because many of my friends came back with scratches, bruises, etc etc..!

Next in line was trekking.. We were given an endurance test by our event manager.. He challenged us not to sip a drop of water until we finished the trek.. :D  So we moved on.. My shoe started showin signs of wear and tear.. I slipped in a couple of places initially but then got used to it.. Trekking was total fun.. Infact the best of the lot.. Friends and me had to help out another Fat boy who was left behind by all of us in a slippery place and he stood there shouting for help and ultimately started crying.. It was only late did we realize that he was missing.. And there we were to help him out.. :D  It was getting dark too.. Which led to more excitement.. :D

So the day passed on quite eventfully must say.. All that was required to round of the day was a good night's sleep .. :P

ZZZZZ !!
